Senator Harriette L. Chandler was elected to the Senate in 2001, representing the First Worcester District. She currently serves as the Senate President Emerita and previously served at the state Senate President.
Senator Chandler was the first woman elected to the Senate from Worcester and the second female Senate President. She also serves as the Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Bills in Third Reading and the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing.
Senator Chandler is an advocate for health care reform, education, public transportation, housing and civil rights. She was previously a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1995 to 2001 and was a member of the Worcester School Committee from 1991 to 1994. Senator Chandler earned her B.A. from Wellesley College, her M.B.A. from Simmons College and her Ph.D. from Clark University. She is married and has three adult children and four grandchildren.
