Sonia Chang-Diaz

Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities Chair

Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz was elected to the Senate in 2008 to represent Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Mission Hill, Roslindale, Roxbury, the South End and her home neighborhood of Jamaica Plain in Boston. She is Chair of the Joint Committee on Cannabis Policy and the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities as well as Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary. The first Latina elected to the Massachusetts State Senate, she has been a leader on education policy and reform, civil rights and equality, expanded voting rights, housing and supports for immigrants. Prior to serving in the Senate, Senator Chang-Diaz served as a public school teacher in the Lynn and Boston school systems and, before that, as a legislative and policy aide. She received her B.A. from University of Virginia and is married with two children.
