Senator Mike Barrett was elected in 2012 to represent the communities of Bedford, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Concord, Lincoln, Waltham, Weston, and large parts of Lexington and Sudbury. Mike is Assistant Majority Leader of the Democrats in the State Senate. He also serves as Senate Chair of the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy and Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change. He’s the Legislature’s leader in the drive to “put a price on carbon,” the single most important step a state government can take to fight global warming. As Senate Chair of the committee in charge of energy policy, he’s active as well on issues of clean energy and utility reform.
For years, Mike has been prominent in efforts to help abused and neglected children, people with physical and intellectual challenges, and women in poverty. Prior to his election, Senator Barrett worked in healthcare and information technology, as CEO and General Counsel of the Visiting Nurse Associations of New England, and, later as a healthcare IT analyst for Forrester Research and Critical Mass Consulting. He also previously served in both the Massachusetts House and Senate. Mike graduated from Harvard College and the Northeastern University School of Law. He lives in Lexington with his wife Nancy. They’re the parents of twin daughters.
